Leap Year Wrap

Is it a scarf? Is it a cowl? Is it a wrap? Or - is it any and all of these?! You choose! While I think about it, a scarf pin is rather a handy accessory for this item, allowing for even greater versatility ... and when I designed this there were also a lot of super scarves popping up online! At a finished measurement of 208 cm (82'') long and 34 cm (13'') wide I now believe it also fits rather snugly (pun intended) into that category! It is a generous size because it was designed for the wearer to feel wrapped in ‘woolly love’ during very cold weather. A perfect gift idea for the student leaving home!

The Leap Year Wrap is named for it's 366 rows and there are 3 pages to download. This design requires a good working knowledge of cabling. There is one, centre, feature cable pattern, which is quite involved but not too difficult. This is balanced by a single, simpler, rope cable on each side, some narrow reverse stocking stitch panels to separate the various sections, and a simple two row textured edge. The rope cables are worked in opposite directions to each other, both leaning in towards the centre. One to the left, and one to the right. Achieved by reversing the position of the cable needle at the time of working. So you need to have your wits about you, in order that you don't send your cables off in the wrong direction! It can be an easy mistake to make, and it's especially exasperating to find out you have done this after a few more rows have been worked! As long as you remain alert, and aware of where you are in the row you are on, all will be well.

I find it helps to check as I go. You can tell I am speaking from experience here, can't you?!

This pattern is clearly written with all abbreviations explained. There are no charts. The 24 row pattern repeat details all sections of the pattern. Many of these rows are repeated throughout the sequence. Therefore ... rows knitted the same are detailed together in the instructions. The following is an excerpt from the pattern showing what I mean: Rows 1: 5: 9: 21: p1, (k1tbl, p1) x 5 - k1tbl, p4, C4F, p4, k2, p4, C4F, p4, k2, p4, C4B, p4, k1tbl - (p1, k1tbl) x 5, p1

Last but not least - the Leap Year Wrap was designed and knitted using 2 strands of (NZ) ‘Naturally’ 4ply yarn (also known as fingering yarn) together on 7mm (US 10.75) needles. I did this because I wanted to use the lovely hot pink and it was only available in the 4 ply. A 10/12 ply (Worsted/Aran Weight) is quite a suitable substitute for this design. You would need to allow approximately 840 m or 919 yds in total length.

This information is also noted in the pattern.
