Venetian Rose Slouch/Beanie

You may recall that about a month ago I released a new cowl design for a collection I am compiling - known as the Venetian Rose Collection.

If you are just joining me here this collection is based on my first design in the series, the Venetian Rose Blanket. Since the cowl release I have been working vigorously away on other projects and designs, and now I have ready for you, the Venetian Rose Slouch Hat - complete with Beanie Option.

Available in 3 adult sizes this hat is somewhat irregular, in that there is a regular, standard brim, but from there it turns into a hat that looks different depending on which angle it is viewed from. There is a patch of the rib area in the brim, that is continued up to where the crown shaping starts. There is the lace section, and there is the eyelet section, all worked over the same row instructions. All taken up to the crown shaping, from where the stitch pattern changes to stockinette/stocking stitch. Which, in case you are not aware, in circular knitting is every row knit, with no purling involved whatsoever! The hat is worked in the round. I used a 40 cm circular needle until the crown shaping from where I switched to an 80 cm cable in order to complete the shaping at the top using the magic loop method, because I do not like DPNS! You may of course, choose your own method of knitting in the round. The instructions do not affect which method you choose to use.

One of the things I really like about this design is that you could actually wear it inside out! Check out the image on the right, below. What do you think?

I reckon!!! If people can wear odd socks ... perhaps a little bit of inside out could possibly also become 'a thing'?! Maybe another, heretofore unconsidered, bonus of circular knitting?!

There are 5 pages to the download and instructions are laid out for the Slouch, with simple alterations for Beanie adaptations noted at the end.

The hat is sized to fit as follows:

SML: 52-54 cm (20-21'') MED: 55-57 cm (22-23'') LGE: 58-60 cm (24-26'')

The height for the slouch design varies (depending on size) from 25-28 cm (9.8''-11'') and the Beanie is shorter in height, starting at 21.5cm (8.5'') for the small size. Both are knitted in DK Yarn, specifically Sublime Cashmere Merino Silk DK for the Slouch Hat and Filatura Di Crosa Zara DK for the Beanie. 2 balls is the maximum you would need to knit one hat (Slouch or Beanie) in either of these yarns, for any of the sizes. The Zara is slightly finer.

The most intricate stitch pattern used in this design is the lace section, which although really quite simple, requires good manual dexterity as well as careful attention to the instructions and abbreviations. There are three different decrease methods used in the lace stitch pattern, and a couple of the abbreviations read quite similarly at first glance and may easily be confused if your attention strays. Everything is explained clearly in the abbreviations section of the pattern. It is not hard! But you do need a good knowledge of how lace works and should be able to easily manipulate the stitches on the needle.
